Healthy Winter Dinner Ideas

The holidays are over but the comfort-food fest is just beginning, so resolve to reduce the sodium in your diet this year

Skip the salty caviar at your next dinner party and serve this healthy, low-sodium play on the decadent dish.

Sure, the tree has been taken down and the menorah put away, but that doesn’t mean that all of those hearty and filling foods that you enjoyed during the holidays are gone for good. Winter — especially for those in colder regions — is a season filled with stews, roasts, and mashed potatoes, so your diet can still be in danger, even though the holidays are over.

One easy way to trim your diet in the new year is to lower your sodium intake, and it can be done in a few easy ways. For those who love a good old-fashioned roast chicken smothered in gravy or a classic roast alongside potatoes, those meals don't always have to be high in salt. Believe it or not, there is a way of making these dishes, or at least replicating their flavors, to create a heart-healthy, low-sodium meal.

For this, we turn to nutritional expert Jessica Goldman Foung, aka Sodium Girl, again to provide us with some simple and easy-to-follow tips on how to make your comforting winter meals a bit healthier for you. Just because it’s colder outside doesn’t mean you need to pack on some extra pounds to keep warm — let the food do that for you instead.

30 Best Healthy Dinner Ideas Your Family Will Eat Right Up

You won't hear any complaints about these flavorful recipes.

Looking for something a little lighter this week that your family will actually enjoy ? You know, healthy dinner ideas that don't look and taste like, uh. cardboard?

Look no further. The nutritious dinner ideas you'll find here are still every bit as satisfying and delicious as the more indulgent recipes you know and love&mdashthey're just tweaked a bit to ensure you and your family are getting the fuel needed to power through the week ahead. These ideas really run the gamut (easy fish dishes! Slow cooker chicken recipes! Grain bowls! Spinach salads!) but each and every recipe has one thing in common: guilt-free tastiness. They also come together quickly&mdashsome being 30 minute meals.

Try a broiled ginger shrimp salad that'll put your go-to salad recipe to shame, a quinoa recipe involving acorn squash dish that's filling enough to operate as a main course, or a spicy jalapeño cilantro cauliflower rice that'll have your whole family asking for seconds. Speaking of cauliflower recipes, Ree Drummond's cauliflower stir-fry is not to be missed. A touch of lime juice gives it just the right amount of acidity.

Adapting Healthy Winter Stew Recipes for Slimming World

If you’re one of my gorgeous Slimming World followers then making a healthy winter stew as meal prep, or as a delicious family meal, can be a great low syn or syn free option! All of the recipes linked below are already healthy, but some of them may not be totally syn free. Here are some of my top tips for adapting just about any healthy winter stew recipe to be either completely syn free or to reduce the syns dramatically!

  1. Swap cooking oil for low-calorie cooking spray – using a syn free low-calorie spray will remove the need for oil to brown meat or fry off veggies or onions.
  2. Change flour for corn flour – corn flour is just 1 syn per teaspoon and you only need to use about half the amount of corn flour as you would flour to achieve the same effect.
  3. Bulk it out with extra veggies – you can make your stew go even further by bulking it out with extra vegetables. This means that any syns in the sauce will be divided by more servings, reducing the syn value and having the added benefit of adding extra nutrients to your diet!

Whether you decide to adapt a recipe to make it low syn or syn free, these recipes are all already healthy and will work out low syn per serving even if kept exactly the same! It’s totally up to you and the way you use your syns.
